Protesters scuffled with police after gathering outside the Jefferson Junior High School, in southwest Washington DC, Friday, to prevent Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos from entering the building for her visit to the public school. DeVos arrived at the school with a police escort and had to enter the building using a back door.

The crowd, which included teachers, parents and union members started a rally early in the morning holding signs and banners.

"From what she [Betsy DeVos] had said in public fora, it doesn't seem like she understands the complex situation, public schools in general," said the mother of a Jefferson Junior High School student. "She is not a member of any of the stakeholder committees that are concerned with public schools. She is not a parent, she is not an alumni, and she isn’t a teacher. And so I question her ability to even empathise with what public schools are going through right now," she added.
