The Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke from Buenos Aires on Tuesday to assure that the government was doing all it could to prepare for possible tsunamis after the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck off the country's east coast near the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Abe, who flew to the Argentine capital after attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Peru, said that he had issued instructions "to provide information about tsunamis and evacuate where necessary, to get a grasp of the damage done as quickly as possible, to be as prepared as possible." He added that the government "will coordinate with municipalities and do our best to ensure safety."
